YIP YAN LAM (STEPHANIE)

My time volunteering with children at Dawn Children’s Centre has been nothing but rewarding. When I first came to Dawn, I was informed that the school did not have a regular Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) stationed at the school. The need was huge and I saw a lot of potential in these children if only help can be provided to them. The setting of an inclusive school has provided me with immense opportunities to collaborate with teachers in my work with the children. Many parents in Uganda were not well informed about the goals and expected outcomes of SLT. Many of them would initially say “My child can talk” as a reason to brush off the need for Speech-and-language

therapy. Therefore, it has also been a journey of empowering and educating parents and advocating for the profession. I am forever grateful for my time at Dawn and for the honour of celebrating tiny victories alongside families with children with disabilities.
