SPECIAL CHILDRENS FORUM

SPECIAL CHILDREN’S FORUM

The Special Children’s Forum was established in 2010 for the purpose of bringing organisations, institutions and like-minded individuals together, to fight for the rights of children with disabilities and their families. The Forum meets twice a year to discuss topics related to disability, as well as challenges and successes faced, to share information and encourage each other, as we all move forward towards a common goal of reduced stigma and discrimination, better quality services for children with disabilities, changes in policies and a more inclusive community and society.

The Forum has had a number of successes to date.

  • The Forum participated in the formulation of the Inclusive Education Policy of Uganda.
  • The Forum co-authored a Disability Resource Guide to ease referrals and encourage effective service delivery for children with disabilities.
  • The Forum has successfully organized 9 Annual Awareness Days, where hundreds of stakeholders, including children with disabilities, come together to raise awareness and advocate on issues concerning children with disabilities.
  • The Forum actively brings together members to create a bigger, more unified voice to amplify issues concerning children with disabilities in different spaces, such as, parliament, government ministries and leaderships.
  • The Forum members have had access to training and resources to strengthen their organisations and enable them to deliver better quality services to children with disabilities.
