Welcome to Dawn Children's Centre

Background

Dawn Children’s Centre was established in July 2008 as a Neuro Developmental and Day Care Centre for children with disabilities and developmental delays.
Dawn was established out of a need to support working parents who have children with disabilities by providing quality care for their child within the Centre and therefore allowing the parents to continue working and earning an income to provide for their families, as well as providing them with the information and resources they require to understand and handle their child’s condition effectively. In January 2012, Dawn expanded and grew to include Kindergarten classes and in 2016 also started Primary Classes.

WHAT WE DO

All children at Dawn Children’s Centre receive all the services they need to facilitate their Growth and Development. These include;

Therapy

We offer individualized initial assessments, so as to provide us with a more in depth view of each child including their abilities and challenges, which in turn allows us to develop an individualized education and care plan that caters to their specific needs. We offer Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Sensory Integration, Behavioural Modification Training, Play and Music Therapies, as both School and Outpatient Services.

Special and Inclusive Education

Dawn Offers Inclusive Education and Care from as early as 8 months old with classes currently running from Playgroup to Primary Six. We use an adapted Curriculum, which includes the Local Learning Framework, as well as International concepts of learning so as to meet the diverse educational needs of all our pupils. We also explore a variety of Vocational Skills with our pupils of varying ages including beadwork, gardening, Crochet and others.

Extra-Curricular Learning

We offer a variety of Extra-Curricular learning opportunities including swimming, dance classes, music lessons and computer lessons.

Resource, Information, Counselling and Support Centre

We provide parents with opportunities to meet with teachers, therapists and admin on a regular basis, including parents days once a term and other drop in meetings on appointment, in order to provide them with counselling, information and progress reports. We provide trainings, workshops and seminars for parents to equip them with the knowledge and information they need in terms that are easier to understand, that will enable them give the best care to their children with disabilities. We also provide information to equip parents of children without disabilities in their understanding of inclusion and disability.

OUR GOAL

Our goal is to

  • Develop Individualised Education Plans (IEP’s) for each individual child to enhance their learning and provide the best circumstances for them to reach their full potential.
  • Create a platform for Information Sharing, Parents’ Support Groups and Networking, where families are able to build relationships with others so that they can handle challenges together and encourage one another.
  • Link families to both Local and International Service Providers necessary for the wellbeing of their child.
  • Encourage a new generation of children who will grow up to have a better understanding of disability and become a beacon of hope and change for an inclusive Uganda in years to come.

Dawn is open Monday to Friday from 6:30 am to 6 pm and is closed on weekends and Public holidays.

We operate on a termly basis and have three terms in a year that run from Jan to April, May to August and Sept to Dec
