I came to Uganda in April 2008 as an Occupational Therapy student to complete my final year internship at Mukisa Foundation. During my 7 weeks in Uganda, I was encouraged to step outside my comfort zone and my shy exterior to engage with a variety of different parents and children. Coming to Uganda was the best decision I ever made. My time at Mukisa Foundation taught me so many new things and cemented my passions to work with children with special needs.

Over the 3 years that followed I was back and forth between the UK and Uganda having fallen in love with the Centre, the children and the Country and in 2011 I made the decision to move to Uganda to volunteer at Dawn Children’s Centre for an unspecified period of time. In 2024 I am still volunteering at Dawn Centre, knowing my time here has shaped me into the person I am today. It has been amazing to see and be part of the growth and development of Dawn as a school from Day Care to Inclusive Kindergarten and Primary School, caring about the education and interaction of children with and without special needs.

I also have the privilege of sending my own two children to Dawn and seeing them grow and thrive in an inclusive environment as it shapes them into caring children who think about others.
